The Khulna Underprivileged Development Association was created at the end of the year 2000 with the scope of dealing with the problems of the most vulnerable groups among the urban poor, namely children and divorced or abandoned mothers. At present Kh.UDA is running a 'Day Care Centre' for children below five years of age. The experience with street children taught us that providing this service we can in fact prevent the increase in the numbers of children hitting the streets in order to survive. Kh.UDA offers to divorced, abandoned and low-income mothers a safe place were to leave their children during the day. The Day Care Centre provides for about 40 children a safe space, health care, basic education and two proper meals a day. The centre is open from seven in the morning to seven in the evening. | |
| Recently we also started a programme of " Health on Wheels". Once a week we provide health services to children on the streets and in the slum areas. We do this moving to focal points like the Bus Stand, the river port and rail station where street children tend to congregate. The programme is once again mainly focused on children and women. | ||
| For the immediate future we would like to open another two day care centres and expand the programme of "health on wheels" to three days per week. | ||
| We are also planning to deal with the problem of young girls (5 to 12 years old) used as domestic slaves. The project outlines are as follows: to carry out some in depth enquiry into the extent of the problem in Khulna; to organize an run a campaign against such practice; to provide contacts and a safe address for girls who are attempting and willing to get away from this form of slavery. | ||
| Kh.UDA is a non-government charity organization registered under the Welfare Department in Khulna. For our activities we depend on private donations. So far we relay on the support of the Xaverian Fathers, the Tokai House, Fondazione Aiutare i Bambini, private donors and own resources. | ||
